The Department of Social Welfare was merged with Women Commission that was created by Late Mrs. Maryam Babangida, the wife of the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, the then Military Head of State of Nigeria which metamorphosed into the present-day Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in August, 1997 as a follow up to the directive given by Late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha. The Social Welfare Department was formally under the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth, Sports and Social Development.
