Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues

The Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues was established in August 1977 during the regime of Late General Sani Abacha.

We are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that there is a co-ordinated effort at the provision of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Services to enable Vulnerable Children, Women, Less Privileged Persons, and Victims of Natural Disasters in society to regain family stability, overall human capacity and Social Development.

Vision

To help build Edo society that guarantees equal access to social justice, economic empowerment for women, children and vulnerable persons and provide a safe sustainable and resilient society

Mission

To create an enabling environment that promotes the development of women, children and vulnerable persons through social development services

Mandate of The Ministry

To empower, protect and advance the social rights of women, children, persons with disabilities, older persons and other vulnerable groups in the State and coordinate the mainstreaming of their interests in decentralized planning and operations at all levels.

Policy Objectives of the Ministry

To enhance the welfare of women through the full utilization of women in the development of human resources and to bring about their acceptance as active participants in every phase of national development, with equal rights and corresponding obligations;
To initiate and stimulate actions designed to improve women, politically, culturally, socially economically and educationally by supporting the work of non-government organizations and to serve as a co-ordinate official organ between government and NGOs;
To provide remedial, preventive, development and supportive services to individuals, families, groups, etc, to enable them cope with social problems resulting from the social justice and security;
To cater for the mentally and physically challenged and the destitute;
To promote the welfare of the child as stipulated in the international conventions on rights of the child and national policy on the child;
To promote the entrepreneurial skills of women and children by creating a conducive environment to acquire relevant vocational skills in their chosen area of endeavours.
