The Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues was established in August, 1977 during the regime of Late General Sani Abacha.
Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that there is co-ordinated effort at the provision of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Services to enable Vulnerable Children, Women, Less Privileged Persons and Victims of Natural Disasters in the society regain family stability, overall human capacity and Social Development.

“To help build Edo society that gurantees equal acesss to social justice, economic empowerment for women, children and provide a safe sustainable and resilent society.”
To empower, Protect and advance the social rights of women, children, persons with disabilities, older persons and other vulnerable groups in the State and coordinate the mainstreaming of their interests in decentalized planning and operations at all levels.
The Department of Child Development was established as a full-fledged Department in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development now Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues as a result of the resolutions reached at the meeting of the National Council of Women Affairs and Youth Development (as it was then) held in Makurdi, Benue State from 18th – 22nd September, 2000.
