INTRODUCTION

The Department of Social Welfare was merged with Women Commission that was created by Late Mrs. Maryam Babangida, the wife of the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, the then Military Head of State of Nigeria which metamorphosed into the present-day Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in August, 1997 as a follow up to the directive given by Late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.  The Social Welfare Department was formally under the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth, Sports and Social Development.

DEPARTMENT MANDATE

  1. To render supportive, remedial, preventive, developmental and appropriate services to individuals, families, groups and communities.
  2. To help clients cope with social problems arising from social change.
  3. To design services that can enhance the living standard of the people.
  4. To ensure social justice and security for children, children in conflict with law and the marginalized.

ROUTINE FUNCTIONS

  1. Carry out Psycho-Social Support in resolution of the family disputes;
  2. Ensuring that fathers pay their monthly maintenance support of their children as at when due for their up keep, including education, health and social welfare needs;
  3. Facilitate the successful rescue of children that are forcefully taken by either parent;
  4. Develop policies and coordinate activities and interventions for Elderly Persons in the State;
  5. Facilitate the annual celebration of Elderly Persons Day in the State and
  6. Facilitate the annual celebration of International Day for the Family in the State.
